The Enchey Monastery in Gangtok, Sikkim, is a sacred place believed to be the residence of guardian spirits who watch over the region. The monastery's influence is felt in almost every household in Gangtok.

The protecting deities of the monastery, Khangchendzonga and Yabdean, are both respected and feared. People offer prayers to these powerful gods, believing that they grant the wishes of their devotees. However, neglecting them can lead to their wrath.

According to legend, Khangchendzonga, Yabdean, and Mahakaal were spirits tamed by Guru Padmasambhava, who then kept watch over the surroundings.

The monastery, around 160 years old, was built on a site blessed by Lama Druptab Karpo, a tantric adept known for his flying abilities. It belongs to the Nyingmapa order of Buddhism and hosts annual celebrations, including the Thamar Chaam monk dance and the grander Singhe Chaam performed once every three years.

Enchey Monastery is also significant during the Pang Lhabsol festival, symbolizing the blood-brotherhood between the Bhutias and Lepchas, witnessed by Khangchendzonga. The monastery worships three main gods: Buddha, Loki Sharia, and Guru Padmasambhava.
