Welcome to the enchanting Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, nestled in the southwest corner of West Sikkim district. Spanning over 104 sq. km, this sanctuary is a natural paradise across the Singalila Range, forming the border with Nepal, with the Rambong Khola river separating it from West Bengal.
How to Reach
You can enter the sanctuary through three points: Hilley, Dentam, and Soreng. Hilley is a favorite among tourists as it's accessible by road, offering a picturesque bridle path to Barsey, especially popular during the Rhododendron flowering season.
Accommodation
At Barsey, nestled amidst Rhododendron forests at 10,000 feet, lies a beautiful Tourist Trekker's hut offering stunning views of the Singalila Range. Boarding and lodging facilities are available, including dormitory options for budget travelers. You can book your stay through the Tourism Department in Gangtok or directly at Barsey.
Climate
The sanctuary experiences a wet and cold climate, ideal for the flourishing of Rhododendrons. July is the wettest month, with regular snowfall above 2500m in winter. Clear skies are common from November to May, offering ideal trekking conditions.
Fauna and Flora
The Singalila Range boasts an abundance of Rhododendrons, with diverse vegetation ranging from dense forests to open knolls. The area is home to various species of fauna, including leopards, Red Pandas, Himalayan Black Bears, and a variety of bird species.
Visitor Guidelines
To preserve the sanctuary's ecological balance, visitors are encouraged to follow conservation guidelines: respect wildlife and their habitats, avoid picking plants or flowers, use environmentally friendly cooking methods, and refrain from littering. Respect local customs and traditions and support conservation efforts.
Entry Permit
Entry permits are required for visitors and can be obtained from the wildlife check post at Hilley or the Forest Secretariat in Gangtok. Rates vary for Indians, foreigners, students, guides, and equipment.
